I've just finished scanning a complete article on how to build an 8 way
MIDI THRU unit from a 1989 issue of "Maplin -the electronics magazine"
and it will be available at my website for a short period of time (I
need the web space for other things, so it won't be there forever -grab
it while you can).
This is a complete project, not just a schematic. So it should be
suitable for even those with limited skills in electronics.
As for the PCB -I've scanned that in a higher resolution and spent a
lot of time touching it up, and I'm hoping that it'll be good enough
for making your own PCB.
Several years ago, the PCB was available from Maplin itself
(http://www.maplin.co.uk), but I don't think they sell them any longer
(however, feel free to contact them about it as you may be lucky).
I bought two of these PCBs, but haven't yet completed them, so I can't
say much about the performance, but I'm hoping they work without any
problems. I'm open for feedback on this though, from those on the list
who can read the schematics and determine stuff from it.
The project explains how to build the unit inside a box which you can
buy from Maplin, but personally I like keeping things neat and tidy in
stackable 19" rack enclosures, and the plan is to put two of these
circuits beside each other for a total of two separate 8-way THRU
units.@
I'm also thinking about building a MIDI-IN selector with 20 inputs or
whatever for sysex dumps from all my MIDI units (my Roland A-880 MIDI
patchbay with its 8x8 input/outputs isn't enough) so I can connect this
unit between the computer's MIDI IN (an Atari STe for those curious ;-)
and all the MIDI OUT connectors of my MIDI modules. But I'm going to
get back to this later as I really need some help in designing the
circuit (I could do a pure mechanical design, but I'd like to have it
electronically switchable instead, with LEDs showing which input is in
use etc.).
Anyway, the reason I'm mentioning this is because I would like to place
the two MIDI thru units and the MIDI IN-selector in one single 19"
(2U?) rack enclosure, which might be an idea for others as well.
For now however, I've uploaded the MIDI thru project here (approx 1.7 Mbytes):
