[sdiy] Build a Tape Flanger?

Most of you probably know that "flanging" got its name from the practice of
slowing down a reel-to-reel tape deck, by lightly dragging one's finger on
the "flange" of the tape reel, slowing it down in comparison to another
tape deck playing a copy of the same tape at the same time.

Does anyone know if any flangers were ever built that employed tape as the
delay mechanism? I'm speaking of a purpose-built machine that would take
the place of the original, improvised two-deck concept.

Would it be worthwhile to try and build something like this? This would
certainly be an analog solution, even more so than BBD's, which should
please Harry to no end.  :)
