I used a Sowter 3575 because it's high quality (0.25 dB from 15Hz to 60kHz
so it says), in a mumetal can and cheap (£25 plus tax and shipping). It's
also 1:1 input/output so if you drive it from the output of a desk or other
line level device you're in the right ballpark to feed an amp if you use a
pot. If you were to use a mic input transformer you might end up too
loud/overloading.
If I was in the US I'd probably get one from Jensen or similar. I don't
think ultra fidelity is paramount here. <flame suit on!>
