Pretty much.  To their credit, there are no patents on perpetual
motion machines.  :-)

   If there is some truth in this can someone point me to info on taking out
   such a thing.

The US Patent and Trademark office web site is very useful:

Also, I highly recommend a book called "Patent It Yourself", by David
Pressman, Nolo Press.

   I wish patents would only last a specific period of time eg. 10
   years. A lot of company's abuse patents and become incompetitive.

Before 1995 patents lasted 17 years.  With the GATT treaty they last
20.  There are some other variations for specific kinds of patents.
