It's a good, low noise preamp. I used it in the Frequency Shifter and in the
HiFli Clone. I think AD has cancelled the SSM2017P (surprised ? not really,
although this must have been the best selling SSM part of all times.)

If you go for an input transformer (good decision !), you don't really need
a
special chip like the 2017. I plan to build a little discrete preamp some
time.
There are these Neve circuits, and the 30dB amp that is part of the Urei
1176
compressor (recently cloned) would make a good building block for
a preamp, too. Transformer will also help to smooth things on overload
(better than the 2017, I bet).
Speaking of transformers: Does anybody make a transformer with 10k
output impedance, and with 600R *and* 10k input impedance ?
I thought that should be the optimum for a combined Mic / Line input,
but I haven't found one like this.
