I think....

A 'super high quality' preamp or direct box might not be the ideal
beginner project.  Working the bugs out to get maximum performance
is a daunting task.  I'd try maybe a simple effect box (fuzzbox, wah,
something)
as it would use cheaper components with less risk.

Just trying to make a good enough power supply for high quality audio
is not a beginner project...

Of course if you are stubborn (tenacious) we WILL help you...   ;^P
