[sdiy] pin 5 of the tl081

I was building a MS-20 type Voltage Controlled filter on a protoboard and 
ran into something strange.  I thought that pin 5 of a tl081 was not 
connected, it turns out that it is something called "bal".  I got my VCF to 
work and it sounds very cool.  Strangely, the tl081 used only functions if 
the output is connected to the bal pin.

What does pin 5, the bal pin, do?

Sorry, I don't think I should be too specific, just because the filter is 
someone else's design and people are very sensitive (and with ample good 
reason) about design details.
