My two cents on acryl panels:

I've built some acryl panels a couple of years ago for my power supplies,
accu-chargers, guitar preamp and other diy gear.

I used three layer technik. The last layer was opaque and colored acrylglas.
the middle was a printed film for the artwork, and the top was transparent.

The panel art was printed and photo-transfered onto a film. I also ephasized
different sections with using opaque color and a brush. Painting from the
backside had the nice advantage that you can simply paint over texts and
scales, and it's still perfect readable from the front side.

I drilled the two acryl plates in one go, put the film into the middle, and
mount the panel into the chasis.

When everything was in place I cut the holes into the film using a sharp
knife, or a needle.

Speaking about acryl drilling.. Thats difficult. You need good tools, good
drills and a workbench where you can fix the panels without breaking or
scratching them.

It wasn't easy, but it looked very professional.Orange acryl for the
background and pastel blue or gray color for the emphasized parts where my
favorite design.
