Oh, I just love polycarbonate.  You can get it with several different 
finishes on it, too.  I got some free samples from McMaster-Carr (I 
just love that company) and one of them was 1/4" thick with a 
'velvet' finish.  It doesn't show wear (scratches) nearly as much as 
the 'gloss' stuff, and is rather nice.  If you used that as a front 
panel for a synth, and lighted the interior, it would be really 
pretty.  Hey, even make one of those color organs with LEDs randomly 
distribuded around the circuit boards inside to have a synth with 
built-in mood lighting.

I seem to remember that polycarbonate is good to well over 200 
degrees F, so go for it.  Lexan is a popular brand name, but there 
are many brands and many suppliers.  Not too expensive, either.
