I'd rather use a 317 here (with resistor divider, just as described in
the data sheet), but I think a 5V regulator would work also. But anyway,
these "high voltage" power supplies are no longer short circuit proof.
If the output is shorted to ground, the voltage difference between input
and output of the regulator IC gets too high.
