my 303 http://smasher.suspicious.org/303/ uses "reverse printed lexan".

it's reasonable for low volume. it uses a sheet of lexan-plastic (the
stuff the bullet-proof glass is made of) and prints the image on the back
of it, then adhesive is put behind that.

the finished product is thin, easy to drill, and the only part that is
exposed to the world, is an impenetrable plastic sheet. most places that
do it, can do the plastic in flat or "velvet" finish, with almost any
number of colors, transparent parts and windows.

i got mine done by MaverickLabel.Com. they did good work, but they were
assholes. if i do it again, i'll find some other place. thomas-register
has ~lots~ of leads for this.
