i'm not sure how "random" this is, or if it's documented anywhere, but
it's a simple circuit i "discovered" accidently, some years ago.

Z< = zener diode

       V+                   V-

use 2 zener diodes, of equal spec, reverse-biased, in series. the voltage
across both diodes should be equal to, or less than, the rated reverse
voltage ~per~ diode.

		ie: if the diodes are speced at 10V each, the total
		across the circuit should be 5-10V.
