Hakko also make a metal tube that attaches to their irons & 
runs parallel to the barrel and sucks right from above the tip;
the fume extraction tube is tied to the iron cord.
I think this approach is superior because otherwise you have to 
keep moving the 'sucker' around if you are on a big job.

It would be easy to make one of these if you are into model
building etc. 

FWIW those rectangular things that sit on the desk are useless.
