[sdiy] fume suckers

at an ex-employers surplus auction a long while ago, i noticed these
little black boxes who's purpose it seems was to suck fumes away while
soldering.  they had a face that was covered with a foam material, and
was inclined at about 45 degrees.  was i correct; is this what these
things did?  if so, does anyone know what they were called and how i
could get one?  i'm starting to get more and more concerned about solder
fumes....
