AFAIK, its called counter electromotive force. The feedback loop that is
made by connecting a load to the terminals feeds the pulses of electricity
back into the windings, which then build up a magnetic force that opposes
your turning the crank, making it harder with a load. Note, too, that this
opposing force has a bit of lag ie you might get one or two easy turns then
the load kicks in.
Someone tell me if I am wrong.
