Sounds like it was just a ploy to get you to shop there..I've seen this sort 
of behavior before from other places (not necessarily electronics related, 
but Radio Shack would be on the list, part of why I try not to go there). 
I've had pretty decent luck with a place here in eastern Massachusetts called 
You-do-it Electronics, which carries a pretty good selection of stuff.
