For beginner stuff, why not start with kit building? It's a good way to
practice your soldering and wiring skills before you tackle design or board
layouts. It's more expensive than building from scratch, but your chances
for success are much higher, as well.

Check:
Paia (www.paia.com) for synths and a bunch of other little goodies

Midwest Analog Products (http://mall.lakes.com/~map/) A variety of stuff,
including some analog percussion modules

Blacet Labs (www.blacet.com) A full range of synth modules

Synthesis Technology (www.synthtech.com) More synth modules

And there's a bunch of others available from list members (Tom Gamble, Tony
Allgood, Chris MacDonald)
