Many, many thanks for your reply.  The 2SC3381 does look promising, and a
local UK supplier (Crickelwood Electronics) stocks them.  For UK diyers,
the prices to compare are:

	2SC1583		2.50 UKP
	2SC3381		90 pence

OK, not quite pin-compatible, but it wouldn't be too difficult to design a
PCB to accept either devices.
