To answer the question, it matters A WHOLE LOT
which is which. Many circuits will self destruct
(read: buy some new parts) by reversing the power
supply polarity.
If you're digging around in the guts of an
electronic device, a voltmeter (DVM) is a
good friend. A DVM can tell you "which is which"
and also how many volts...
