The simplest osc circuit I can think of for a
555 just to get something out of it is:

+power to pins 4 and 8.
ground pin 1.
pin 7 no connection.
optional 0.01uF from pin 5 to ground.

tie pins 2 and 6 together.
10k from pin 3 to 2&6.
0.1uF from ground to 2&6.

Output pin 3 should have about a 1kHz square wave.
Values not critical, especially the pin 5 cap.
This is from memory. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I am having trouble with getting a pulse signal from these 555 timer chips from
radio shack. I am not to sure about component handling but I was always under the
impression that they are pretty sturdy however I haven't been able to get any to
work in my projects. I am following all schematic outlines and procedures it seems
but still can't get any signal. What could I possibly be doing wrong. I f anyone
has any good schematics for Audio oscillators that are cheap and easy please let
me know.
thanks,
Joey.
