Well... I don't intend to invite to a flamefest, but we must be able
to seriously discuss alternatives and their pros and cons.

There are many tradeoffs. There is also the issue of what has grown to
be a habbit, people keep defending their habit despite their better
knowledge. You most probably will find me doing the same thing most of
the time...
