    This makes a lot of sense.  The only equipment I have ever had destroyed by
lightning are modems.  I used to run a BBS, and while lightning is rare in my
part of the country, it does happen.  I lost three modems due to lightning.
While I never knew for sure, I had always figured it was a sudden change in
potential between the power and telephone grids that caused the problem.  Surge
protectors that I had on everything never saved the modems.
