I leave my whole studio unplugged when not in use. Same thing for the
entertainment center. Even just having the phone line plugged into the
modem caused a surge from the lightning strike on a phone pole that took out
my modem and the serial card on the PC, which luckily wasn't on the
motherboard. Lots of the these surge protectors don't respond fast enough
for lightning. This is also a concern at gigs, some of these clubs have
rather dicey wiring.
If you are getting a surge protector, get the expensive ones from Tripp-Lite
that are around $60, I think they're now called the Terminator or something,
Digi-Key sells them. Consumer Reports tested a bunch of these and found
that the cheaper ones were basically snake oil.
Translate all the above information to European equivalents where
necessary...
