Shafts ???   (cue guitar through waa waa ... chickchickchickChikaChikaChick...)

I cut them (carefully) by holding the unwanted shaft firmly in a vice, and cut with
a very fine hacksaw blade...

Best way at home. I think. Some like a cutoff wheel in a Dremel Mototool...
