[sdiy] SMT?

The discussion of perfboard reminds me of a question that I have for
the list: how many of you use surface mount parts?

I'm using surface mount for a commercial project that I'm working on,
and I find that with the exception of 100 pin SQFP IC's with 0.6mm
pin spacing, I actually like soldering SMT parts. Once you get the
hang of it it's fun. Rework is easier with some parts and a bitch
with others. Resistor codes actually make sense, but capacitors
often aren't even marked. You win some and loose some.

Why is it that all of the modular synths and DIY stuff that I've seen
so far is through-hole? Do synth circuits typically pass more power
than typical surface mount parts can handle?
