I recently took a tour of the Euphonix factory. Euphonix makes
high-end mixing consoles. The place is about a mile from my house and
a friend of a friend works there.
While there I saw the world's coolest digital pots. These are for
automated digital mixers so the pot needs to be settable both by
humans and by software, and a comfortable and intuitive user interface
is very important.
The pot has a stationary hub and and a rotating collar around the hub.
The human can rotate the collar to set the pot, and there is a ring
of LEDs mounted on the top of the hub to display the pot's setting
whether the pot was set by the human or by software.
If that wasn't cool enough, the LEDs have different display modes
where a different range of LEDs might display volume level or panning.
