Something similar, at least in conception, is the optical crossfader module 
used in quite a few DJ-style mixers.  Since they're replacable, shouldn't 
be too hard to get one and see how to use it, although they might be 
somewhat expensive.

Eh, what do I know.  I'm still trying to work up the nerve to drill into my 
Korg Poly-800 and mod it.
