I keep a good stock of the parts I use. Although, when you are raring
to go on a project, nothing is worse than not getting what you want.
Now mouser generally lists how many parts are in stock. If I notice
what I want is 0, I try to find a sub (sometimes, for instance, 74HCxx stuff
comes from several different vendors, if they don't have one, try another).
Also, If mouser doesn't have it, Digikey might.
Another thing to keep in mind with mouser is that they have several
distribution points. Even if it is in stock, it may come from several
places. If this is the case, the first box you get will indicate the parts
that could not be shipped from that particular location were back ordered.
It sometimes takes about a week for the parts to show up from all over the
country.
