HoeDown (asymmetrical portamento?)

Yes diodes, plus a center-off switch to provide up, up/down, and down modes.
Like Paul says, it does not work entirely well for exponential portamento,
but when the diodes are inside a feedback loop (such as in linear
portamento) this works great. Did this on my first modular (the ENS-73 when
I was in high school).
