Yeah, the US used to be this way, but, for example, I work for the largest
TV manufacturer in the world and it *used* to be that you stayed until
retirement. But, nowadays, they wait until you reach a certain age and try
to get you to take an early out as the old managers retire and new managers
come in and do not want to deal with the "old-timers" who won't allow
themselves to be belittled and insulted. So out the door goes all our needed
tech and info. We usually end up hiring these guys back as consultants at
about 5 times the price just to keep operational. Somehow this is *better*
for the company, as the corporate zombies always mutter under their breath
while they are walking away from you after being confronted.
I love my job, but I am tired of managers fitting the stereotype. Having a
Korean hardliner for a boss doesn't help either. We get along, but his
management style is purely empirical, which works well in dictatorships, the
military, and prisons.
