Great idea!  So to clarify, are you saying... 

Put the modules on a common bus but just use the patch cords to notify the
system of intermodule connections?  

I like this.  You get the gratification of handling patch cords with the
accuracy of a digital system.  (Let's not get into to obvious downside of
"accuracy" though!)
