The most used combo in the 70's for what you are talking about was an organ or electric piano with a fuzz and Oberheim ring modulator with a pedal to control note 'bending'. This combo was the closest thing to a synth type sound you could get back then. Of course when using the ring mod you needed to play mono because chords sounded horrible.
