(possibly stupid) LFO question

If the LFO has a square wave out, you might also use a frequency
counter, in period mode. I'd prefer the scope unless you want extreme
accuracy. Even then I'd use the scope to make sure that the frequency
counter is not lying (bad trigger etc...)
