Probably more important than a frequency counter is a DVM (digital volt
meter), preferably a 4 1/2 digit meter. A good DVM is critical for
calibrating your VCO's.
Another thing that I feel is important is a good soldering iron.
Something that is temperature controlled sure makes it a lot more pleasent
assembling those circuits.
