Pattern Controlled Filter

Hi all,

Can anyone tell me if the PCF (pattern controlled filter) was a new idea developed by the makers of Rebirth, or has it been done before (e.g. in hardware)? I'd like to take the PCF idea and use it myself in a design. But I don't know where the PCF originates from.
