In the case of the 808 toms circuits I cloned, I made the path to the front
panel pots for the tune controls too long, and they picked up excessive
constant hum.

By definition, if bad layout wasn't a problem, it wouldn't be 'bad'.
If you don't understand why a particular circuit was laid out the way it
was, you may very well hit trouble if you lay it out your own way.
