I could have answered this a few years ago. *no-one* here knows anymore.
best think of it as an extended commercial rather than a style-guide, and
get out more- see some live bands. for me, radiohead have bought into the
whole process even (or especially) given their non-conformist stance (six
minute singles etc.).
