Recently I have been trying out the LM1496 balanced modulator chip for
audio use. This is hardly a new idea of course, the PAiA 4710 used one
long ago. I don't think the performance is all that outstanding, but it
is inexpensive (89 cents each at Jameco). If you're interested, I put
up a schematic of the circuit I've been experimenting with (your mileage

Also, Jameco still sells the AD633JN for $6.95, which meets your "under
$10" criteria.
