  It is both.  :)  See for yourself:

  Here are scans of the KLM-301 schematic and PCB layout from a mark 1
trident.  The bottom layer is barely visible, but enough of it exists on 2
VCO clusters to see what they did.  Note the serpentine ground underneath
the op-amps.  In addition there is a "ground plane board" mounted on
standoffs over the VCOs.  I'll take a picture of this inside the mkII.
