making you own knobs

I've often toyed with the idea of making my own knobs too. I think that
casting resin is a bit too messy though. At one time I tried to make the
enclosed capsule around a tweeter for a talk-box out of casting resin. All
I can say is WHAT A MESS THAT WAS. Casting resin is: gooey, toxic, and takes
time to set.
What's a good alternative?... There is a material that you can get in
craft stores called friendly plastic. I think most people make jewelry out
of it, but I find that if you get it warm enough, you can mold it into
anything (it's like putty). I haven't tried painting it, but I have a
project , myself, in which I need custom knobs that I was going to try this
same method on- I have two small joystick pots with no handles on them - but
hopefully, not for long.
