 It is part of the overlay that has circular cuts that you "pop out" before 
affixing to the panel.
The center of the "pop outs" have crosses on them. What you did was tape the 
overlay on the rear panel, place a nail on the crosses and hammer centering 
dimples for the holes to be drilled. Then before you adhered the overlay, you 
removed the "pop outs".  It worked well for the retrofit.
