Well, first of all I don't lift an eyebrows by BJ reaction, on the
same time he voices criticism which is floating around here allready.

Maybe some detail correction, it's not the same group of people
selecting the lauriates in all classes. BJ is refering to Kungliga
Akademin (Royal Academy), a group of (supposed to be) 18 people, which
traces their roots back to king Gustav III who created the academy.
Anyway, they are a responsible for the price of literature. I do agree
that they should walk in shame, since some of the literature lauriates
have certainly been less known, spread and most importantly creative.

Good old Astrid has wiped the ass with the Swedish govrement more than
once, and especially one time is well known, since she critizised the
tax laws by writing a short children story called "Pomperiposa" and
ever since we talk about Pomeriposa-taxes. This little story contained
the core of here critizism and it was interesting to see how the
Politicians had a hard time to argue against this children story.

Also, the interpretation that is being done to Nobel's will is
certainly reaching out. To some degree following it by the letter does
have certain problems, I give it that, but one of the things that I
think that they fails in doing is to acknowledge acheivements in good
time. Most of the physics and chemestry/medicine stuff is being
acknowledged too late, when people almost left the active life. This
is certainly not how Alfred Nobel intended it.

If you go and look at the peace price, there the price is given at
times while the people is at work acheiving something. For instance
the prices in the Ireland and Israel/Palestina conflicts shows how
they go in and promote an ongoing process, make a statement.
Such things is certainly not very common in other prices.

My conclusion is that it is certainly not an area without debate.

However, it is not many private parties which gets transmitted live
every year, so it must be something about it.

Interestingly enougth, Einstein did not get his physics price for what
is being acknowledged as his greatest contribution to physics, namely
the general relativity theory. Prices have been given to derivate
findings thought. Most disturbing.

Cheers,
Magnus (0 Nobel prices so far ;)
