There is the old Doepfer/Elector sampler, a modular CV controlled sampler.
I might be what you looking for, a 8bit system.
Let's see, got the circuit layout here some where..

Found it.
Oeps, the HF VCO is CEM3340 with a 4046 pll on its tail.
AARGH, the sample playback module uses a CEM3320 VFC.
Bad luck.

Sorry this isn't gona help you much.

There is an example of something like what you're looking for on the Atmel
side.
Here I got it, AVR application note: AVR335.
It exist of little more than a 90S8535 and a AT45DB161 data flash.
10 bit resolution, no DAC or ADC is needed, nice.
The draw back, maximum sample rate 10kHZ.
 Still its a nice example.
