when you say 'over several periods' all you need is to throw away the 
whole number of cycles, seeing as N360 + X has same sine etc as X.

Perhaps, if you are doing something like this, you could use dithering
to smooth out the lumps (of course, in the limiting case, dithering
gives you linear interpolation)
