I have not seen nor heard the effect, but the mere name of
it suggests, to me, a system similar to the Shepard function
deal for VCOs but replacing the VCOs with phase shifters.
Functionally similiar, but Bode implements it more elegantly. See the
patent.

The way you make a barber pole phaser is to use the four outputs of
a quadrature sawtooth LFO to modulate four separate phase shifters.
That's the simple answer.
That's one way, but Bode's approach is completely different. Check
out US patent 4,399,326.

Consequently, I am puzzled about the functionality of the barber
pole phaser. By name a 'shepard tone' equivalent of phasing might
be expected. However, there are stories of frequency shifting too.
Can anyone resolve this?
