Bode Barber Pole Phaser

There were a series of advertisments in Keyboard magazine back in the
seventies which included a picture of what appeared to be a 19" rack. (Too
small to make any detail out).

>From memory, I think there were seperate adverts for frequency shifters and
vocoders. Which might imply the unit is not a version of the Moog frequency
shifter?

Consequently, I am puzzled about the functionality of the barber pole
phaser. By name a 'shepard tone' equivalent of phasing might be expected.
However, there are stories of frequency shifting too.

Can anyone resolve this?

How did you hear about this effect? Have _you_ seen or heard one?
I've been trying to find information on it, so anything you know
  would be appreciated.
  thanks,
