In short, it enhances the stereo image. I heard a demo once and it was
pretty amazing (I'm sure having the right recording helped). The clocks at
the beginning of Pink Floyd's "Time" sounded incredibly
three-dimensional--you could pick each one out in a 3D space! When it was
switched off the sound went sort of flat--it just sort of collapsed into a
thin layer in front of me. Subtle but impressive.

I seem to recall that it used analog delays but I'm not sure (sorry Harry).
