I'm sorry but I have been building new goodies so I've been in
creative mode and unresponsive to the real world. I'm not really
back yet but I caught this and wanted to share. Maybe you can
call the History channel and find out when they are going to be
running this again. It was a terrific 5 mins with film and sound
most of the time....The only problem was the curious omission of
all things Theremin??
I was watching the History channel....well actually Kim was watching
the history channel and I was building synth circuits with the TV on and
she said "Hey they are going to do the first Moog" and sure as hell I pressed
record just in time to catch "History's lost and found"
Described as a "Unholy union of a computer and a piano" showing a pic of
the first Moog built in 1964 for Herbert A. Deutch. Bob and Herb standing
there smiling...;-)
Showing the evolution from white noise to the telharmonium (sp?) basically
a mechanical band playing on the telephone kinda like cable tv. Then the
punch card RCA synth. In 1963 Moog met Deutch and with a $200 grant
they built the first Moog in two weeks. The keyboard was Deutch's idea.
In 1964 they took it to a audio show and set up a proto-type with paper
labels (this puppy looks raw!) and a few people came by to look and shortly
Bob says somebody said those magic words "I'll take one of those."( This is a
recent interview)
Then we tour the plant and watch Windy play a wall of Moog. (Mr. Deutch
and Mr. Moog are commenting on all this stuff....it's great!) Then they
talk about how Herbert donated the fist Moog to his university and how
none of the students would play it because they knew what it was and
were too in awe to touch it ,so it collected dust.
Until Deutch tried to auction it ...no takers...give it to the Smithsonian...no
takers....and finally the Henry Ford Museum in 1983 where it now
resides. There is actually footage of Herbert Deutch playing the first
Moog and it ( are you ready for this?) sounds just like a Moog!!!! LOL
