Martin, thanks for putting this more elegantly than I could!
I was just reading Boscorelli's book on DIY guitar FX 
(highly recommended) and noticed that he had some success 
with a dual envelope detection system, where you have two
parallel detectors with different time constants,
enabling flexibility to tailor response dynamics.

I'm sure I have mentioned the book before (The Stompbox
Cookbook by N. Boscorelli)
