By just taking a quick look into my PMI databook I see no reason to
why you should not be able to use a single MAT04 instead of a pair of
MAT02s. Naturally you would need individual tempco resistors.
The VCO's interaction with each other is really due to disturbances
which causes intermodulation. A common temperature on the expo's
doesn't heal that problem. You could however possibly reduce the
relative drift between them since the expo converters experience
basically the same temperature.

The Moog measurement technique is a way to narrow the range of those
times transistors. Today we should be able to better characterize
transistors.
